When I shut down Windows, it usually hangs or displays an error message instead of the shutdown screen.
If you're using Windows 98 SE, obtain the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement from Windows Update. For earlier versions, run Msconfig, click Advanced on the General tab and select Disable fast shutdown.
